Jalview has its own alignment editing model - sometimes it helps to
remember that its only possible to create gaps to the left of a sequence
symbol (e.g. holding shift and clicking and dragging a residue to the
left does nothing unless there is a gap that can be deleted). You should
also remember that editing is constrained to the local contiguous set of
columns if you have hidden columns to the right of your sequence, or if
you are editing inside an active selection (in which case, edits are
constrained to the selected region).

Probably not - but you may have inadvertently enabled keyboard mode (F2
toggles between keyboard and mouse editing mode). If, however, you need
to make precise changes, then you may find it easier to use the keyboard.
